A very basic rendering of a page layout using html to link sections of the screen to other screens, lets remote users test the application and give feedback.  Wireframe prototypes are recommended when the pages are dynamically generated, so that the users testing the software know that each page would have content and functionality displayed based on their previous actions.

Method

Showing the architecture of the site and sketching out the core functionality on the screen can be done using software like Dreamweaver, Visio or even Paint. Unlike paper prototypes, a wireframe is built for review on the computer.  Called high-fidelity prototypes, they provide management and users to understand how software will work when something is clicked on in a way that paper prototypes do not.

Results

A rough black-and-white blocking of the page is best delivered to the client so that there is no mistaking the prototype for a final design.

Timeframe and Preparations

Often done instead of paper prototyping, wireframes are the last step before user testing and then handing off to the programmers.  Preparations involve knowing the software that would be used to create the wireframes.
